Why I'm Breaking Up With Zinnias for 2026

Okay, besties, gather ’round, because I’ve got confession to make, and I can almost hear the collective gasp from flower gardeners everywhere:

This year, I’m officially declaring that I’m done with zinnias. That’s right: zinnias won’t be making an appearance in my 2026 garden.

*Gasp!*

I know, I know. Zinnias!

The quintessential cut flower.

The vibrant workhorse of so many summer gardens.

The darling of the cottage core aesthetic.

But hear me out before you clutch your gardening gloves in horror.

I truly went into this past season with the best intentions. My Pinterest boards were filled with stunning zinnia varieties, and my bloom buds across social media had me pining for those beauties as they pranced around fields with their beautiful blooms. I pictured my garden bursting with those cheerful, abundant flowers, ready to be snipped for endless bouquets.

I invested in a few different zinnia varieties that looked absolutely *dreamy* on the seed packets – you know the ones, with names that promised ballerina-like magic and fluffy, gorgeous heads. And yes, I even sourced some from those super popular, highly-rated seed websites, convinced that *this* was the year I’d finally fall head-over-heels for them.

And while, yes, they did bloom, and some were kinda pretty, I just…wasn’t feeling it. I found myself looking at my zinnia patch with a shrug more often than a swoon.

They were fine. They were okay.

But they didn’t spark that deep, soul-satisfying joy I get from so many other flowers. There wasn’t that ‘oh-my-goodness-look-at-you!’ moment that makes all the watering worth it.

Then, to add insult to injury, the powdery mildew decided to make itself a very unwelcome guest. Despite my best efforts with spacing and air circulation, those tell-tale white spots started creeping in, making my already “meh” patch look even less appealing. And honestly, who needs that kind of drama in their garden?

And that’s okay! This is the beauty of gardening, isn’t it? What thrives for one person, or what brings them immense joy, might not be the same for another. There’s no shame in admitting that a popular plant just isn’t jiving with your garden style or your level of patience.

For me, 2026 is going to be about leaning into the flowers that truly make my heart sing, the ones that thrive effortlessly in my conditions, and the ones that don’t require an advanced degree in fungal disease management (unless they are 10000000% worth that kind of effort). And zinnias just ain’t it for me.

So, while I know many of you will continue to grow magnificent zinnias (and please, keep sharing those gorgeous photos – I’ll admire them from afar!), I’m scratching them off my list and making space for new floral adventures.
