Okay flower loving friends, let’s talk about the “Flying Lady.”

I found this Cambridge Glass Crown Tuscan compote on a recent antique shopping trip, and I’ve been gatekeeping how good she looks all dressed up with a [mostly] grocery store haul.

If you think you need to spend hundreds of dollars for a professional flower arrangement to get this vibe in your own home, you’re overthinking it.

The Trader Joe’s Shopping List

To recreate this look on a budget, here is exactly what I grabbed:

• Peonies: For that “cloud-like” romance and luxury.
  • Tip: You can find peonies in spring AND winter at Trader Joe’s!
• Tulips: Let them stay long! They add the reach.
• Hydrangeas: These are your base —they help fill out the space, add a billowing effect and help hold the other stems in place.

I did add one special, non-grocery-store find: Sweet Peas, for that fluttery movement.

Depending on the time of year and where you live, you can find sweet peas at a florist, wholesaler, farmer’s market or specialty floral retailer. Just know that they are highly toxic to dogs (and possibly other pets), so please keep them far away from your furry friends.

The “Asymmetry” Hack

The vintage Flying Lady milk glass compote vase is naturally asymmetrical, so I didn’t fight it. I leaned into the shape of the vase when arranging the flowers, letting the tulips and sweet peas reach over top and spill over the low end to capture the essence of ascending into flight.

Pro Tip: When you’re using a vintage pedestal or compote vase, keep your heavy flowers (peonies) near the center and your “reachy” flowers (sweet peas and tulips) on the edges. It creates instant drama without the designer price tag.
