There is nothing quite like the feeling of settling into a vacation spot. The bags are down, the car is unpacked and the adventure is about to begin. But let’s be honest: while hotels offer an escape, they often lack soul. No matter how fancy, those standard-issue paintings and muted color palettes can feel sterile–far from the warm, inviting sanctuary we cultivate at home.

That’s where one of my favorite, though admittedly unusual, travel rituals comes in: bringing my own blooms.

Just like a single arrangement can transform a dreary corner of your own living room, bringing a small bouquet along on a road trip changes the entire atmosphere of a temporary space.

It instantly infuses the room with life, color and a familiar scent, making that generic hotel room feel like a home away from home.

I’m not talking about elaborate centerpieces or packing expensive crystal vases. When I’m on vacation, the goal is effortless beauty. I sometimes collect cuttings from my garden right before leaving—whatever is in bloom—or even grab a handful of store bought beauties like a luxurious bunch of Pink O’Hara roses or a few precious winter peonies. Tucked safely in the car, these hardy varies travel beautifully.

Trust me: the moment you place those blooms on the bedside table or on your little desk, the whole room shifts. Suddenly, you aren’t just sleeping in a box; you are relaxing in a curated space. It’s a little secret ingredient for maximizing the relaxation quotient of any trip–whether you’re staying in a charming Airbnb or a budget hotel.

But remember: if you’re ready to trade in sterile white linens for the sight of fresh petals on your next road trip, a little preparation goes a long way. Traveling with flowers requires just a touch of foresight to ensure your vibrant companions arrive looking their best.

Here are Some of My Tips for Traveling with Flowers:

Know Which Flowers Travel Well. First and foremost, you need to know which varieties are ready for the journey. Just like some people are better travelers than others, some flowers handle the bumps and temperature shifts of a car ride much better. Sturdy blooms like roses or carnations are fantastic companions, but you’ll want to leave delicate varieties like dahlias safely at home—they simply won’t survive the trip.

Keep it Cool. Secondly, remember that flowers prefer it cool. While you might be tempted to blast the heat in the car if the weather is chilly, try to keep the temperature around your blooms moderate. If you anticipate a long drive where the car will be roasting, it might be better to pick up your bouquet once you arrive at your destination. Similarly, once you unpack them, be mindful of where you place them in the room. Sun blaring through a window is a quick way to wilt your beautiful blooms, so keep them in a cool, shaded spot–and away from the A/C or heat, too.

Bring a Few Tools. Finally, don’t forget your toolkit! You’re on vacation, so you probably won’t want to hunt down supplies. I always travel with a few simple plastic tumblers or cups that double perfectly as sturdy, unbreakable travel vases. And never forget your sheers! Giving your flowers a fresh snip upon arrival is crucial for hydration. Just remember to bring a small pack of Clorox wipes keep your tools clean.

This simple act of bringing blooms turns a temporary stop into a truly inviting haven, reminding you that beauty and comfort can travel with you–wherever the road may lead.
