Bloom Buds, I need you to drop whatever you are doing and grab your car keys. This is not a drill; this is a [happy] floral emergency!
If you, like me, suffer from Chronic Peony Longing the moment peony season ends in spring, prepare yourself for the some of the most delightful news you’ll hear this season: “Winter Peonies” are officially in stock at some of our favorite local grocery stores!

I know, I know. Peonies are the undisputed queen of late spring. We all wait with bated breath for that glorious window in May and June when their lush, velvety petals burst onto the scene, filling our homes with unmatched romance.
But you may not know that the brilliance of nature and the global horticulture supply chain gifts us a rare, limited-time peony encore. That time is *now*.
For those of you who rely on fantastic, accessible floral sections, you already know the gems that are Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods. These stores consistently deliver quality and value, and right now, their floral departments are where you can find these blooming beauties. TJ’s tends to have more variety/selection, but I’m totally digging the Coral Crush peonies at Whole Foods..
Of course, this is welcome news for any flower lover, but it’s especially exciting for Fall 2025 DIY brides with weddings in the next few weeks. If that’s you–and you’ve always dreamed of walking down the aisle holding a bouquet overflowing with peonies–this is YOUR moment.
The ability to source these high-impact flowers affordably and locally during the off-season is a game-changer for wedding budgets. Peonies offer maximum visual impact—a few stems go a very long way, giving you that high-end, luxurious floral look without the high-end, exclusive floral price tag.
Just know this window is fleeting.
Peonies have a notoriously short season and typically only bloom once on their plants. So even with this specialized sourcing fueling these winter peonies–whether from Alaska (where some come from) or the southern hemisphere–the supply chain remains incredibly tight and the stock unpredictable. Especially in fall, peonies are a true luxury item that appears only for a blink.
I confess, my own love for these magnificent flowers borders on obsession. I’ve already filled a few vases with arrangements around my home—a perfect antidote to the Seasonal Affective Disorder that’s already setting in (it happens quickly for this summer baby).
And because I have zero idea how long this glorious run will last, I’ve also indulged in a bit of floral hoarding. A handful of perfect, closed buds are currently tucked away in my garage fridge. It eases my seasonal anxiety knowing I have a secret stash of spring waiting for me a week or two from now.
So if you, too, are craving that unparalleled feeling of spring luxury as the night creeps ever earlier and the cold sets in outside, now is the time to visit your favorite Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.
Don’t let the sun set again before you go on your own personal peony hunt.
Bring that breathtaking beauty home before these rare winter jewels disappear again.
